Then you get Dungeon Crawler Carl, a crazily entertaining story of a human and his cat trapped in an underground world and trying to survive.

This was an exciting story that kept me guessing, and it had some very funny parts too!

At the beginning of this story, Courtney is a high-achieving but miserable girl who is busy earning money, pleasing her family , and generally being what other people want her to be. Then she loses her job and decides to embrace her inner underachiever and just try to be happy. 

And then she goes through a portal into another universe.

This was a strange and quirky book. I liked some of it, but in general it was too long. The characters were good but the story was too slow.

Roadkill

At the beginning of this story, Jack Kernigan has just hit something with his dad's delivery truck. The problem is, he doesn't know what the heck it was that he hit. Actually, the bigger problem is the damage to the truck; his dad is already extra disappointed in Jack because he'd been expelled from MIT before his freshman year was even over.

But now he's got to spend the summer in his small hometown in Ohio, where at least he has his best friends Patrick and Nat to keep him company. And maybe the three of them can solve the mystery of what on earth (or not-earth?) Jack has run over with his truck...

This was a fun and funny story to listen to.

This hyperbolically named book by the married actor/comedians is pretty funny, but not hysterically so. 

It was a bit too long and repetitive; if you like these people already you'll probably like it. If you don't know who they are you will be bored.

Destructive Reasoning

This is the second book in the "Authorities" series (see below), and it is as funny and interesting as the first. In this story, Detective Rutherford and the other members of the Authorities travel from their native Seattle to Los Angeles, trying to catch a killer who is targeting actors.

Worth Fighting For

This book is a modern reimagining of the Disney movie Mulan, part of something called the "Meant to Be" series. The other books are by different authors, and I may try another one because this novel was light and fun, all in all.

It was, of course. quite predictable, as we already know that Mulan and Shang have to fall in love at the end, and it contained a bit too much "I-Can't-Tell-The-Truth-Or-The-Story-Will-End-Here- Syndrome,"** but it was not bad for a straight romance.

This shows up in romances quite a bit, in which a main character withholds some vital piece of information form his/her love interest for flimsy reasons, making it obvious that the author is using the device to further complicate the plot and lengthen the story.

Based on a True Story

 Nonfiction? by Norm MacDonald

I put a question mark after the word "nonfiction" above because, although this book is labelled as a memoir, the story seems to be almost completely made up.

Norm MacDonald was indeed a comedian who was on Saturday Night Live in the nineties, and he was alive in 2016 and doing stand-up when the book was written (he has since died), but the rest of this "memoir" is quite fictitious.

Also it's not funny. At least the first half isn't. I gave up.

The Kaiju Preservation Society

In early 2020 Jamie Gray is abruptly fired from his job just before the pandemic shutdown and is forced to do food delivery since no one else is hiring. Then he gets a chance to work for a mysterious organization called KPS, the eponymous "Kaiju Preservation Society." But what is a Kaiju, and how are they being preserved? The answers are surprising!

This was a fun story and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This was a fun memoir about a comedian reminiscing about his childhood while recovering from a a major depression.

One thing I really liked about it was how the author recounted exact details of the circumstances and set-up for great punchlines he made over twenty-five years ago. I'm glad to not be the only one who does that!

The Floating Feldmans

This was a fun little story about an extended family taking a cruise together at the behest of the matriarch. The Feldmans love each other, but they don't always like each other, and there is more than one secret threatening to be revealed during the trip.

The Authorities

Sinclair Rutherford is new to the Seattle police force, but he's sharp. He hopes to become a homicide detective, but for now, as a rookie, he has to settle for being needled and hazed by the current detectives. But then he gets a lucky break and is noticed by someone important... or is it so lucky after all? Time will tell.

This was a hilarious and exciting story with great characters. I highly recommend it!

What if the moon turned into cheese? LITERALLY?!

There's the premise of this strange book, which is funny and very odd. The story jumps around to different characters and how the moon-change affects them personally. At first I was slightly annoyed by how the characters kept switching out --just when I'd gotten interested in a character, he/she would be unceremoniously dropped and a new one would be introduced-- but after a while I got used to it. I decided to treat the book like a series of connected short stories.

The ending was a surprise!

Florence is a single mother who doesn't really fit in with the other moms at her son Dylan's fancy private school. She used to be in a girl band, but now she just does odd jobs and lives on child support from her ex-husband. But when another boy in Dylan's class is kidnapped on a field trip, Florence is determined to find out what happened, mostly because she is worried that Dylan may get blamed.

This was a really fun story with a surprise ending.

The Night the Lights Went Out

The author suffered an unexplained brain hemorrhage in December of 2018 and came very close to death. He tells the story of his struggle to recover in this book.

It was very interesting and quite funny in parts. I really appreciated the honesty.

Youtube-style videographer Amber has always been a fan of late-night talk radio host Jack Owens. So when she gets a chance to take Jack's show "That's Not Right" to internet video, she's all for it. It's a great idea, she thinks. But it turns out Jack Owens doesn't agree.

This was a funny little set of stories that tied together well. I enjoyed it.

The Hike

This was a very strange book that leaves the reader wondering what is really happening and what Ben is imagining. It was interesting.

In this story, detective Bunny McGarry himself is missing, and his amateur sleuth friend Paul is going to have to find him. But Paul is having trouble because his girlfriend Bridget isn't speaking to him, and she's really the brains of the operation.
