This Tender Land

 Fiction by William Kent Krueger.

In 1932, young Odie and his brother Albert are confined to an orphanage in rural Minnesota, under the care of a woman they call The Black Witch. Tragedy had struck the boys once when their parents died, and then strikes again just as they think they may find a way out of the orphanage and into a family. They are left alone again and go on the run.

This was a great story with moving characters.

I also read by this author: Ordinary Grace
