Swamp Story

 Fiction by Dave Barry.

This was a great Crazy Florida story, involving an alleged swamp monster, a failing bait shop, a posturing politician, a disgraced news reporter, and Jesse, a young woman who desperately needs to get away from her broke loser boyfriend.

Dave Barry is a master storyteller! I highly recommend this book.

A Hope Divided

 Fiction by Alyssa Cole.

Marlie is the daughter of a freed slave, born in the Deep South before the civil war. She stays with her mother and learns the art of medicinal herbs until she is suddenly sent to live at the home of her real father, who was her mother’s former owner.

This story is about how Marlie tries to become her own person (and find love!) as mixed-race woman in this strange environment. It was a decent romance story but not great.

Max and Mia’s Story

 Nonfiction by Louise Allen.

Max and Mia are four-year-old twins who come to Louise Allen for foster care. But unlike most of the kids in the foster system, they come from parents with money. Is this an advantage or a disadvantage? The answer is surprising.

I really enjoyed this story!

The Strung Trilogy

 Fiction by Per Jacobsen.

Randall comes back from a two week writing retreat to find the something super weird has happened to the world while he was gone. There are dead people hanging from lampposts all over town, and everyone else doesn’t seem to notice! What could possibly be happening?

These books were exciting and fast-paced dystopian novels. I enjoyed them!

Greenwich Park

 Fiction by Katherine Faulkner.

Helen is finally having the baby she’s been waiting for, after she and her husband have been trying for years. And her sister-in-law and good friend Serena is due around the same time! Helen is so happy.

Then, at her first prenatal class for Greenwich Park expectant mums, Helen meets Rachel, another pregnant woman who seems to want to be her new best friend. Since Helen is off work and supposed to be “taking it easy” until baby comes, and Serena has been distant, Helen finds herself spending more and more time with Rachel.

But why is Rachel so determined to be friends with Helen? Could there be a darker motive?

Well obviously. It’s a “psychological thriller novel.”

This was a good story that didn’t go where I expected. The very end was a great twist!

Miss Marple: The Complete Short Stories

 Fiction by Agatha Christie

These were all great stories. As usual, my only complaint is that short stories are too short!!

The Accidental Alchemist

Audible Original Fiction by Gigi Pandian.

Zoe Faust is an alchemist, and she is older than she appears. She has just bought a new (to her) historic home in Portland and plans to take some time fixing it up while continuing to run the online business she’s been operating for years out of her motor home. But when she opens the first crate of her belongings sent from storage she gets a surprise visitor! Then the handyman she hired to help with home repairs ends up dead on her doorstep.

This book was trying to be both a murder mystery and a sci-fi fantasy story, but it didn’t really work. It was an okay book but not great and the characters didn’t catch my interest.

The Big Dark Sky

Fiction by Dean Koontz

Joanna Chase hasn’t been back to the old ranch in Montana since she was a child. After all, both of her parents were killed there. But now she hears a mysterious voice calling her back. At the same time there is a serial killer with a god complex on the loose not far from that same place.

This was a strange story, as I should certainly have expected from Mr. Koontz. The characters were good and there were some surprises too. I liked the slight twist at the end.
