What Could be Saved

 Fiction by Leise O'Halloran Schwarz

Beatrice and Laura Preston are grown-up sisters who have been at odds with each other most of their lives. The family has never been the same since Philip, the third Preston sibling, disappeared at age seven while the family was living in Bangkok. That was in 1972; now in 2019 the sisters are dealing with their elderly mother's mental decline as well.

Then Laura gets a message that Philip might be found, still living in Bangkok after over forty-five years! Beatrice is sure it's a scam, but Laura is hopeful.

This was a really good book. It gave me a lot to think about, and also held my attention.

The Girls in the Stilt House

 Fiction by Kelly Mustian

It's 1923, and Ada Morgan comes back home to the Mississippi swamp in disgrace. Although she hates to go back to her mean-spirited father,  she was abandoned by the boy she left home for and she's got no other choice. She arrives to find the stilt house on the swamp a mess, but uninhabited. Is her daddy on a long trip, trapping and trading? And who is it she feels watching her from the swamp?

Although the title gives the reader some clues about what's coming up for Ada, the story still holds a few surprises. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. I didn't really like the narrator in the audiobook version.

The Sleepwalker

 Fiction by Chris Bohjalian

Annalee Ahlberg is a chronic sleepwalker, and when she disappears from her room one night in August, it's assumed that she accidentally sleepwalked into a nearby river. Her daughters Lianna and Paige are hoping against hope that she will still come home, but then her body is finally found. But did Annalee actually walk into the river on her own?

This was a good-enough story, but it moved too slowly for me. Still, the ending was surprising.

After the Funeral

 Fiction by Agatha Christie

As the family gathers for the reading of Richard Abernathy's will after his funeral, his gauche sister blurts out, "He was murdered, wasn't he?"

Before that moment, no one had thought this was so; however, once Cora had said it, the idea became lodged in everyone's mind. And when Cora herself was murdered the next day, it seemed investigation was in order. It was up to Hercule Poirot!

This was an exciting mystery that keeps you guessing, as usual.

What Comes After

 Fiction by Joanne Tompkins

This book was categorized as a mystery, but it is not. On page ONE the reader discovers that Daniel was killed, and immediately learns who murdered him. There is no mystery there.

The point of the story is how Daniel's father recovers from his son's death, and for the reader to learn why Daniel was killed.

You Deserve Each Other

 Fiction by Sarah Hogle

Naomi is engaged to Nicholas, but she can't recall why, since she kind of hates him. Or does she?

This was a decent straight romance: I didn't love it.

This Tender Land

 Fiction by William Kent Krueger.

In 1932, young Odie and his brother Albert are confined to an orphanage in rural Minnesota, under the care of a woman they call The Black Witch. Tragedy had struck the boys once when their parents died, and then strikes again just as they think they may find a way out of the orphanage and into a family. They are left alone again and go on the run.

This was a great story with moving characters.

The Match

 Fiction by Harlan Coben.

This book is a sequel to The Boy from the Woods, a great thriller I read two years ago.

Now Wilde is back in New Jersey, but not necessarily ready to resume all of his old relationships. He’s still quite a loner, but he’s starting to learn that he might also want to find out about his mysterious past. A DNA matching website has given him some clues, but it’s up to Wilde if he wants to get to know any of these new relatives.

Add in a virtual vigilante group and few reality stars and you get quite a story!!!

Fools Rush In

 Fiction by Kristan Higgins

Millie is returning to her old home town on Cape Cod to live, having finished medical school and a residency. She has a plan to work with the local doctor and finally get the boy she’s loved since middle school to notice her.

This was nice little straight romance with good characters and fun dialogue.

So now I have finally read all the Myron Bolitar books!

In this story, Myron wants to help a golf pro with a kidnapped son, and he has to do this without help from his friend Win.

The Game of X

 Fiction by Robert Sheckley

This short story was included free with my audible membership, but it’s not an audible original. It’s a 1965 comic spy novel. I really liked it!

Apparently this author is known for sci-fi books, and so a lot of the reviewers were disappointed that this story was set in the real world.

The Girl With All the Gifts

 Fiction by M.R. Carey

The story begins with Melanie, who is being help in a military-run secure facility with twenty-five or so other kids, each in a separate cell. Are they being studied, or educated, or just imprisoned? And why do the captors seem almost afraid of the prisoners?

This book was not at all what I expected, and it was great!!
