What You Wish For

 Fiction by Katherine Center

Samantha is a librarian at a private elementary school in Galveston, Texas, where she moved several years ago from a school in California. Since she's been in Texas, Samantha has begun to flourish in way she never has before, and she feels like life is good. She only vaguely remembers Duncan, the man she nursed an overwhelming crush for, and the reason she fled California. And maybe she might wish to see him again. But then, Duncan comes to her school in Texas....

This was a fun little straight romance.

Get Lucky

 Fiction by Katherine Center.

Sarah has been unexpectedly fired from her fabulous advertising job in New York City just before Thanksgiving. But she decides she won’t think about that problem until she gets back from visiting her sister Mackie in Houston; maybe some solution will present itself during the holiday….

This was another fun romance by this author whose style I’m really fond of. I love the characters!

The Lost Husband

 Fiction by Katherine Center

Having lost her husband two years before, Libby is moving to her aunt's goat farm in Texas to start over, bringing along her two small children. Of course, by saying she "lost her husband," I mean that he died. Despite the book's title, the man is not really lost.

Then Libby meets a strange girl called Sunshine who cheerfully states that she can find Libby's lost husband. What can she mean? And, more importantly, can Libby move on with her life in this new place without her husband?

This was a really fun story with great characters and a couple of surprises.

How to Walk Away

 Fiction by Katherine Center

Margaret Jacobson is pretty sure that her boyfriend Chip is going to propose to her, and she knows she'll say yes. Not only that, she's just finished business school and landed her dream job--well, not officially, but they've said it's as good as hers. She's on top of the world, figuratively speaking.

Well, if the story is beginning this way, we know there's a fall coming, don't we? And Margaret has a literal fall, in the form of a airplane crash. Will she lose everything?

This book was good, in a mostly-no-surprises way The characters were great! I like this author's style.

Memorial

 Fiction by Bryan Washington

Mike and his boyfriend Benson live together in Houston. They really love each other, but they have been going through some troubles.  The major issue is Mike’s lack of fidelity, although Benson tries to act like he doesn’t mind.

Then Mike hears from his mother in Japan that his father is dying. Although his parents are divorced, he knows this will upset his mother, so he invites her to come for an extended visit to the apartment he and Benson share in Houston. Then (inexplicably!) he leaves for Japan the day after she arrives, blithely expecting Benson to take care of her in his absence as he goes to see his dying father instead.

Although Mike’s mother and Benson are strangers, they begin to forge a relationship. Mike stays in Japan for months, waiting for his father to die. Occasionally he texts. Benson continues to muddle along as he always has, but it’s clear he needs to decide if he will continue to accept Mike’s casually selfish behavior or demand a change.

This was an interesting book and I really liked some of the characters (NOT that dirtbag Mike). The story was difficult for me I guess; I really wanted good things for Benson. I wasn’t exactly happy with the ending but I guess it was realistic. I don’t know how to rate this one.

Tumbleweeds

Fiction by Leila Meacham.

Tumbleweeds
http://www.barnesandnoble.com

An orphaned girl moves to Texas to live with her grandmother and forms a best friendship with the two neighbor boys, each of whom fall in love with her. This is a classic love triangle story, but it avoids being formulaic.

This was a good book.
