The Farm

 Fiction by Joanne Ramos

Mae Wu is an ambitious young woman who runs a special enterprise called Golden Oaks Farm that caters to the Very Rich. Golden Oaks is a home for surrogate mothers, but it's an elite one. The women who carry the privileged fetuses for the wealthy clients, called the Hosts, stay on the farm from implantation until birth, and they are taken care of and carefully monitored for the entire nine months. Mae meticulously manages every aspect of the farm, from sourcing the Hosts to keeping the Clients happy.

Jane and Reagan are Hosts at Golden Oaks, each carrying a baby for an unknown Client in order to receive a big bonus after giving birth. But Jane and Reagan are very different people; one is a struggling immigrant mother who does domestic work, and the other is a recent college graduate who wants to pursue an art career without her parents' support. The two of them are befriended by Lisa, a returning Host who knows her way around the farm and isn't above bending the rules.

This was a really interesting book with good characters. The reviews I read weren't overwhelmingly positive, however, and I think that is because readers were expecting the story to be something it isn't. It's not The Handmaid's Tale by any means.

This book is NOT a dystopian novel; it's a realistic one. These characters live in the world that we live in, where the gap between the very rich and very poor exists, but also where almost everyone falls somewhere in between. I really liked this story and it gives the reader a lot to think about.

The Crash

 Fiction by Freida McFadden

Tegan is twenty-three years old and eight months pregnant. She works a crappy low-paying job, but she's hopeful that she'll be able to get support from the baby's father once it is born. But things don't work out as well as she had planned...

This was an exciting thriller with several twists!

The Shadow Wife

 Fiction by Diane Chamberlain

This is a re-release of the book Cypress Point under a different title. Since I hadn't previously read that book before it didn't matter to me, but this seemed to be quite an issue in the reviews. So... heads-up, I guess.

Joelle is a hospital social worker who has recently discovered she is pregnant. The problem with that is: she's divorced and the father of this baby is married to someone else. Also he works at the hospital with her and she's in love with him.

This was a really good story.

The Surrogate Mother

 Fiction by Freida McFadden

Abby is a career woman who longs to be a mother but can’t get pregnant on her own. Monica is her assistant at work who offers to be a surrogate mother.

Sam is Abby’s husband… who Monica wants to steal. This last bit is pretty obvious from the beginning, which gives the reader a bad case of “Oh-No-I-Can’t-Look-Syndrome.” ** Sometimes I can get past that syndrome and still enjoy the story but when it's heavily laced with "Geez-Catch-A-Clue-Already Syndrome," **** it's just too much

This book was okay but I had a lot of trouble getting past the predictability of the Evil Monica. (Hence the strong desire for main character Abby to CATCH A CLUE already!) To be honest, I skipped about 200 pages and read the ending.

**Oh-No-I-Can't-Look Syndrome

(See also The Last Thing She Ever Did by Gregg Olsen)

That's when you know a main character is making a major error in judgement that's going to have huge and terrible consequences.

****Geez-Catch-A-Clue-Already Syndrome

(I'm making this one up right now but I'm sure I'll find more examples later.)

This is when the main character's stupidity is SO obvious that you can no longer identify with/make excuses for them.
