Trudie, the main character in this book, was born a German and emigrated to the US after World War Two as a very young child. She has tried all her life to come to terms with her heritage, actually acquiring a PhD in German history in an attempt to understand her people's complicity in the atrocities of that war. But her real story is revealed through the eyes of her mother, the reader learns that she really knows nothing at all about her true history.
This was a great book.
