Roadkill

Audible Original Fiction by Dennis E. Taylor

At the beginning of this story, Jack Kernigan has just hit something with his dad's delivery truck. The problem is, he doesn't know what the heck it was that he hit. Actually, the bigger problem is the damage to the truck; his dad is already extra disappointed in Jack because he'd been expelled from MIT before his freshman year was even over.

But now he's got to spend the summer in his small hometown in Ohio, where at least he has his best friends Patrick and Nat to keep him company. And maybe the three of them can solve the mystery of what on earth (or not-earth?) Jack has run over with his truck...

This was a fun and funny story to listen to.

Scum of the Earth

Audible Original Fiction by Alexander Kane

If alien oppressors took over the Earth and forced all humans to slavery (or death), would you work for them? Or would you try to fight against them?

This is an interesting philosophical question; but for our fictional hero Ezra Barker, it's a real choice when the Merg invade the planet. And he chooses the safe route: he collaborates with the Merg and works at a nice office job instead of being killed or sent to the work camps. But deep inside, Ezra wishes he had joined the Resistance instead.

This was a really exciting adventure story with great characters. It had funny moments but wasn't necessarily as humorous as the other books I've listened to by this author. It's an imaginative and engrossing story!

The Forever Part 2

Audible Original Fiction by Craig Robertson

This is the sequel to The Forever, Part 1, unsurprisingly. It was a fun continuation of the first audiobooks, which was actually two novels just as this one is.

In this part of the story, immortal android space pilot John Ryan tries his hardest to save humanity from extinction. This is particularly difficult because Earth has already been destroyed and the remaining population of humans is travelling through space to a new home world.

As long as you're willing to go along with the premise behind these stories, they are great fun.

We Are Legion (We Are Bob)

Audible Original Fiction by Dennis Taylor.

Okay, so just hold onto your metaphorical hat for this premise: Bob Johansson strikes it rich, signs up for a cryogenic preservation subscription, and then gets killed. He is reanimated a hundred and fifty or so years later as... wait for it... a space probe.

This was actually a fun little story, if you're willing to embrace the oddity and suspend your disbelief. It's the beginning of a trilogy, and I think I'll look for the next one.

Will Save the Galaxy for Food

Audible Original Fiction by Yahtzee Croshaw

After Earth conquers space travel with hero star pilots boldly going where no man has gone before, they figure out how to do it more efficiently with quantum tunneling. This innovation brings a million opportunities but consequently a lot of star pilots are out of work.

In this crazy future world we meet our hero, a star pilot scratching out a living taking bored tourists on spaceship rides to relive How Outer Space Used To Be. Then an opportunity comes his way that results in a great caper story.

This was a fun little story with both excitement and laughs.

Differently Morphous

Audible Original Fiction by Yahtzee Croshaw

At the beginning of this story, there's a training school in Britain for youngsters who show signs of magical powers. Also there's a secret ministry office that is in charge of all things related to magic. But if you think that you've heard this story before, you haven't.

From the very beginning, it's obvious that this is NOT the relatively benign Britain of Harry Potter. The magic in this story is darker and weirder.

This was a really good story with great characters. I loved it up until the very end, at which point I was confused. Maybe the author is trying to set up for a sequel, but I'm seriously not sure what actually happened.

Still, this is a really good book and an amazingly original one.

The Forever

Audible Original Fiction by Craig Robertson

In the not-too-distant future, scientists discover a space phenomenon that will destroy the whole of planet earth in less than one hundred years. How will they prepare for such a thing?

The decision is made to find a way to leave earth and relocate all the people somewhere else. John Ryan is one of those chosen to be sent out in a superfast exploratory spaceship to find a new planet that can support life as we know it. But first, he (and the other scout pilots) has to be made immortal somehow, as the journey will take at seventy years or so, and he must remain fit for duty the whole time. In the meantime, people on earth will be hard at work building giant "world-ships" out of reclaimed asteroids for the entire population of the planet (hopefully) to evacuate on.

Okay, so it's an almost-unbelievable scenario. It's SCI-FI, all right? Just go with it!

As with any story, it's the characters that make the difference, and this book has some good characters. I also enjoyed the narration and the unexpected plot twists, although it was a kind of long.

This audiobook contains parts one and two of a five-book series. (See what I mean; it was long!?)I really liked these two books; however, they were about nine hours each, so it will be while before I finish the entire series. I think I probably will keep going though...
